To Water Or Not To Water...
That is the question… that so many have. “Spring showers bring May flowers, right?” Of course this is truth. However, it doesn’t rain every day, or sometimes every week. This is why the question of whether to water or not is tricky. It isn’t as simple as that.
Everything on our plant has a need for oxygen, sun, and water. Nothing can survive without those things. As humans, we know that we should have a certain amount of sunlight per day to assimilate the vitamins and minerals that we consume every day. We also know that we should have a certain amount of water per day (conventional wisdom says eight 8oz glasses a day). And of course nothing would survive without oxygen.
As humans, we know that we should have a certain amount of sunlight per day to assimilate the vitamins and minerals that we consume every day.
Plants and grasses are the same as we are. They need the same things to grow and thrive. As far as the water question is concerned, generally lawns need at least one inch of water per week to maintain your green color and active growth. It is general because some weeks it rains much more than that, and in those times watering is not necessary. However, if it rains two inches on Monday and then the rest of the week is say, 80 degrees plus, your lawn would need to be watered again.
Of course this brings us to another question. How long should I water my lawn to achieve this one inch mark? Well that is a little tricky as well. Water times will vary depending on drainage, sun exposure, and turf type. The average established lawn should be watered for 30 minutes every other day.
Ok… we now know that we should water, and depending on a few factors, how long we should do so. But, when is the best time to water? We wouldn’t want to do a lot of watering and it is just evaporated by the sun. The best time to water is during the early morning hours (before 11:00 am). This will allow moisture to soak deep into the soil before evaporation can occur.
